State Senate Candidate April Capone Announces Campaign Will Qualify for the CEP After Only Two Weeks
North Haven, CT – State Senate candidate April Capone announced this morning that her campaign has reached both thresholds to qualify for Connecticut’s clean election program. Since she launched her campaign during a Facebook live video two weeks ago, Capone has met the $16,000 threshold needed to qualify for the State’s Citizen’s Election Program. Capone has also received more than the 300 small dollar donors, which is also required under the program.
“I never imagined that my candidacy would be met with such enthusiasm and optimism” Capone said. “Voters from across the district realize, now more than ever, that elections matter. Despite the uncertainty we are all facing, people are engaged and ready for experienced leadership to help navigate these difficult times.”
According to Capone, in just two weeks the campaign has raised over $17,000 from 416 donors, nearly $10,000 coming from 326 in-district donors. To qualify for the Citizens Election Program, State Senate candidates must raise $16,000 in small dollar contributions between $5 and $270. Each candidate must also have at least 300 in-district donors.
East Haven Democratic Town Committee Chair Joe Santino wasn’t surprised that Capone qualified so quickly. “As Mayor, April showed true commitment to public service. No one works harder than April, and people know and appreciate that she is fighting for them. I know she will bring that dedication to Harford to bring real results for the entire 34th senate district.”
North Haven Democratic Town Committee Vice Chair and campaign Treasurer, Jenny Caldwell said that Capone’s ability to qualify so quickly shows district democrats are starting to coalesce. “I think Democrats across the district recognize that April has the skills and experience to represent us in Hartford. Now is the time we need experienced leadership on day one.”
Jaime Hine, a member of the Wallingford Democratic Town Committee and Capone supporter, said April’s campaign is getting noticed. “April is working hard to talk to as many Wallingford residents as possible. Everyone I have spoken to is thoroughly impressed once they get the chance to meet her. She is certainly energizing democrats in town.”
The 34th State Senate district covers all of East Haven and Wallingford, most of North Haven and a part of Durham. Capone has called for greater access to absentee ballots by providing postage paid return envelopes to voters, a more equitable healthcare system and emerging from the current COVID-19 pandemic both physically and financially healthy.
